Best Kueh Lapis Legit (Spekkoek) in Jakarta: Clairmont Patisserie

Kueh Lapis Legit (or Spekkoek in Indonesian) is a specialty Indonesian cake that literally means “rich layered-cake”. It has its origins in the Dutch colonial period in Indonesia. Over the years, the recipe has been perfected by Indonesian bakers.

A good Kueh Lapis Legit has more than 18 LAYERS; baking it involves a labour-intensive process plus tons of patience. One needs to actually stand beside the oven the entire time, adding the batter and grilling it layer by layer.

A standard 8 x 8-inch cake can contain up to 30 EGG YOLKS (!!!), 500g OF BUTTER (!!) and 400g OF SUGAR (!) yielding a cake that is rich, buttery, and eggy in nature. Not a cake for the faint-hearted, definitely. :/

There are many types of Kueh Lapis Legit — cakes containing nuts, cheese, prunes/raisins, chocolate, etc. My personal favourite is the original Kueh Lapis with prunes inside. SO GOOOOOD.

Although Kueh Lapis Legit is a pretty expensive delicacy ($$$, effort, and calories), a good Lapis Legit is worth every single cent and every mouthful of fat! 🙂 🙂 🙂

My parents are big fans of Kueh Lapis Legit and each time they visit Jakarta, they’ll buy back 2-3 large boxes/ 6 small boxes of Lapis for themselves and their friends. So far, we’ve tried Kueh Lapis from Holland Bakery, Eaton, The Harvest, Mandarin Oriental…but the one from Clairmont beats all the others hands down.

Freshly baked Lapis from Clairmont.

Established in 1997, Clairmont Patisserie’s Kueh Lapis are one of a kind — fresh, moist, tender and bouncy texture, aromatic, and VERY REASONABLY PRICED. So long as you order 1 big box of Lapis Legit, the delivery to your home is free.

During my parent’s most recent visit to Jakarta, I helped them order 2 big boxes of Lapis Legit Prune from Clairmont. We requested for each cake to be sliced equally into 3 parts, so that it’s easier to give away. To our surprise, the staff went the extra mile to pack the cakes into 6 pretty boxes.

2 big boxes of Lapis Legit Prunes (divided into 6 pieces) for IDR 669,600.

All in all, we paid IDR 669,600 for 2 big boxes of Kueh Lapis Legit (with prunes) – after a 15% promotional discount and additional 10% discount. My parents were very pleased with the packaging and the price. They happy, I also happy. ❤

FYI – Clairmont has many outlets all over Jakarta, one of which is in Gandaria. Enjoy! x

PS: Don’t weigh yourself after eating the Kueh Lapis Legit! (Feeling very guilty now after helping myself to 2 slices after dinner.)

  1. Hi there, found your website while searching for the best Lapis Legit in Jakarta. I will be in Jakarta this weekend and will buy a Lapis Legit from Clairmont for sure (thanks for your recommendation!). I hope they are opened on Sunday.

  2. I tried to ask them to cut for me and put into the boxes, they agreed to do it for FOC. But one day after placing my order, they messaged me and informed that they want to charge me SGD4/box and also they want to charge me SGD3 for delivery! Not so impress with their service!
